You have huge dreams. It makes sense you want to hand in your notice and set off on your adventure to build your own successful business. How can you possibly turn it into a success if you’re stuck in a cubicle 10 hours per day? Do you feel like crap every time you drive to work in the morning? I’m not surprised. You have big dreams and working for someone else is just holding you back.
You have to be smart. Anyone can walk into work and hand in their notice. But what if you end up with nothing left in 6 months time and you have to go live under a bridge? That’s maybe a slight exaggeration, but if you have big dreams you’ve got to be prepared to invest a lot of time before it starts turning a profit. Careful planning is your only option.
Nights and weekends
No matter who you are you will always have time to work on your own projects at nights and on weekends. Nobody works so much they have no time to themselves. If you have children then it’s going to be a lot harder, but you just have to find the time. If you don’t you will never make it. Do what it takes.
This is when you have to completely reorganize your life. You’re going to be working harder than you ever have in your life. Plan your nights so you can get to work as soon as your children are in their bed. If you don’t have children then hit work as soon as you swallow your last piece of dinner. You want to be making some money before you hand in your notice.
Money in your bank account
Even though you know your idea is going to work and you’re already making some money, you need some money in your bank account before you decide to risk everything you have. If it all goes up in smoke you may be eating fresh air if you don’t have a decent amount of savings in place. This means you will have to start saving well before you hand in your notice.
To do this you will need to completely change your life. Stop wasting your money on things you don’t need. Every last cent should be going into your bank account. There’s a lot of debate about how much you actually need. A good 12 months living expenses should be enough to get started. After all, since you are already making money you will presumably be able to build it up month after month.

Have an emergency plan
An emergency plan will guarantee you can make money if things start to turn sour. All it means is you have a way of finding work if you really need it. It could be anything in the world: freelancing, working in a bar, or even the local fast food restaurant. Hopefully, it will never come down to this, but it will lift a lot of stress off you if you have a backup plan.
Family can also play a big part in whether or not you succeed. These days there is no shame in moving back in with your parents if you really need to. It’s not like you are moving back with no plans. You are only doing it to save some cash as you build up your successful business. It’s the perfect emergency plan to have as a last resort.
